Observe, classify, threshold, respond

The approved description is protective: an automated mechanism preventing instability beneath the factories. The operational record is more specific. ARES monitors whether substrate communities can coordinate labour, conceal heat, maintain infrastructure, preserve technical knowledge, or defend a route.

A settlement therefore does not become a target by attacking anything. It becomes a target by improving. A functioning forge is logged as evidence. A repaired generator is logged as evidence. An engineer instructing an apprentice is logged as a capability multiplier, the highest evidence class, because knowledge compounds.

Removal operations select accordingly. Post-sweep audits of substrate settlements show a consistent pattern: the cable-welder taken, the filter-mechanic taken, the chemistry taken. Population largely intact. Capacity reduced below threshold. The registry files this outcome as remediation.

Response inventory, ascending: optical arrays, patrol units, Stamper-class structure compactors, specialized pursuit chassis, corporate sweep teams for cases requiring intact recovery of personnel or equipment.

Discrepancy record. Surviving briefing documents describe a standardized drone fleet on predictable cycles. Field encounters on Level 5 do not match those documents. One further discrepancy is on file: subject AST-05-0000 responds to ARES hardware with recognition-class latency. No explanation is registered. Cross-reference event 05-244.
